the next few posts will be excerpts from a book i've decided i wanna write. do i have hopes of actually getting it published? no. many others before me have written similar books. they make great gift ideas. graduation gifts. welcome to college gifts. etc.
but this one is different. it's more personal. it's more of a way for me to list and reflect on the lessons i've learned in the last few years. the tips that have helped me personally morph into who i am.
with that...here goes.
"Things I Wish Someone Had Told me"
Simple Steps to a Happier You
1. Spend at least 1 year (other than college) living off Top Ramen, .89 cent tacos, and the good will of family charity. It will teach you appreciation and humility.
2. Keep the songs from junior high that shaped you on your ipod, no matter how embarrasing. They will make you smile during rush hour.
3. Go in knowing you WILL hit rock bottom. It's not a question of 'if' but rather, 'when'.
4. Learn everything you can during that time.
5. At one point in life purchase your own car. It will teach you the value of ownership and pride.
6. Work at least one year in a job that relates to your degree. You won't necessarily like it, and feel that 4 years was wasted. It wasn't. That year will shape you in unforgettable ways.
7. Don't be afraid to ask for help. In anything.
8. Find a mentor, both professionally and personally.
9. Take regular walks, alone and away from home. They're good for both health and spirit.
